Field notes · The short version

What does golf sandbagging actually look like?

A golf sandbagger keeps an artificially high handicap so they receive more strokes than their demonstrated ability deserves. One brilliant round proves nothing. The useful evidence is the gap between the handicap, the round, the player's record, and how the rest of the field performed.

01

Check the round

Turn the score, course, tee, and Handicap Index into a comparable differential and plain-English odds.

02

Check the record

Look for a pattern: tournament scores beating the player's everyday posted history again and again.

03

Check the field

Compare everyone from the same event so easy conditions do not make an entire leaderboard look suspicious.

Method note. Score differentials account for Course Rating and Slope. The USGA separately defines an exceptional score as a differential at least 7.0 strokes better than the player's Handicap Index. Rare is evidence—not a confession.
